After a decade of development and over 250 updates, the Croatian studio Gamepires has released SCUM version 1.0 on Steam, concluding the seven-year-long Early Access phase. This intense PvPvE open-world survival simulation puts you on the eponymous island, where you must survive in a dangerous, realistic environment.

Survival in SCUM depends on whether you play alone, with friends, or with 64 other players on a server. You will need strategy, resource management, and adaptability to navigate the 225-square-kilometer island with its forests, abandoned cities, and difficult terrain. Threats like other prisoners, mechs, and undead puppets are everywhere, while unpredictable weather, wildlife, and various dangerous environments also ensure that every playthrough is different.

Version 1.0, first introduced at Summer Game Fest 2025, includes various improvements. A complete map overhaul brings enhanced visuals, updated points of interest, and better performance, meaning areas like the island’s beaches, forests, and snowy mountains should look even more impressive. Additionally, a stronger anti-cheat system has been introduced to ensure fairer gameplay on official servers, and new vehicles such as a seaplane, a tractor, and a sport motorcycle bring new ways to explore or escape.
