Super Rare Games has announced that it will publish the first physical release of Shovel Knight Dig. The action platformer first launched in 2022 as a digital-only game, created by Yacht Club Games in partnership with Nitrome. After years of success across digital platforms such as Apple Arcade and PC, the game is now coming to store shelves for the first time on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

This physical release comes after the launch of the Ultimate Edition, which brought all available DLC to modern consoles in May 2025. The new boxed edition is aimed at collectors and will be produced in very limited numbers. Only 2,500 copies will be made for PlayStation 5, while the Nintendo Switch version will receive 4,000 copies. Each version will include a full-color printed manual, a rare bonus that fits well with the retro style of the Shovel Knight series.

The announcement arrives during a challenging time for Yacht Club Games. Reports from late 2025 suggested the studio had reduced its team to around 15 people and shifted all focus to its next project Mina the Hollower. After delaying the game beyond its planned October 2025 release and putting a direct Shovel Knight sequel on hold, the studio is aiming for a strong launch of Mina to secure its future as an independent developer.

Even so, many do not see this physical release as a quick or desperate move. Super Rare Games is known for limited physical runs like this and often manages production and sales for indie teams. These partnerships allow developers to earn extra income from existing games without pulling staff away from new projects. In this case, the Shovel Knight Dig release appears to be a planned way to keep the brand active while the main team finishes work on Mina the Hollower.

Pre-orders will open on January 8, 2026, at 19:00 CET through the Super Rare Games online store. Prices will range from 40 to 48 euros, depending on region and bundle options.
