The horror game VILE: Exhumed by solo developer Cara Cadaver (Final Girl Games) and publisher DreadXP was first delayed from its July 22, 2025 Steam release. Now, the game has been removed from the Steam store entirely. Valve flagged the game’s graphic and controversial content during its review, leading to this delay and highlighting broader censorship tensions in gaming.

Last week, Cara posted on X about the delay stating that Steam had not approved the final build after a month-long review, making the July 22 release “unrealistic”. The game, described as a “deeply personal horror story”, explores a disturbed individual’s mind through an old computer’s interface, uncovering secrets about adult film actress Candy Corpse. It tackles heavy themes like misogyny, parasocial obsession, trauma, sexual violence, and entitlement, with a mature content warning for sexual content, violence, and abusive language.

However, today she shared a “disappointing update” indicating that the game has been “fully removed and banned for sale on Steam”.

“DreadXP and I are working actively to make sure that we can make the game available to you ASAP. Next week you can expect to hear specific details. I want to be clear. VILE: Exhumed was no banned for its use of gore in storytelling, or the violent themes. It was banned for sexual content with depictions of real people.”

Steam’s history of challenging games with controversial themes is well-documented. In July 2025, Valve updated its guidelines to ban “certain kinds of adult content” that violate payment processor rules, prompted by pressure from banks and card networks like Visa and Mastercard. This led to the removal of numerous adult-themed games, including titles with tags like “rape” and “incest,” though enforcement has been inconsistent, leaving some similar games untouched.
