Retro platformers never really go out of style, but Wicked Boy is taking things a step further by making it feel like a game that could have been discovered in a forgotten Game Boy cartridge from the 1990s.

Developed entirely by solo creator Gutterspawn Games, the upcoming platformer recently showcased its pixel art, which draws heavy inspiration from Nintendo’s classic handheld era. You will move through bright forests before descending into darker underground caverns filled with ladders, treasure chests, enemies, and secrets waiting to be uncovered.

Despite its retro appearance, Wicked Boy isn’t simply trying to recreate the past. The game combines old-school visuals with smoother animations, modern sound design, and more responsive controls than many of the titles that inspired it. Influences from Mario, Mega Man, and even Abe’s Oddysee can be spotted throughout the gameplay. You will battle strange creatures, cast spells, solve platforming challenges, and explore interconnected levels packed with hidden surprises.

Wicked Boy is currently listed as “Coming Soon” on Steam. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
