The independent developer Motion Twin has released a new update for its action roguelite Windblown, which entered the Early Access phase on Steam in October 2024. The update, called the Sanctuary Update, brings an abundance of fresh content to explore, alongside numerous improvements to the game’s main hub – The Ark.

You can now step into the Vortex and explore the dangerous biome of the Obsidian Sanctuary, where a powerful new boss and his Sentinel minions await. This challenging area includes unique locations, hidden secrets, and original music composed by Danger.

Unlocking the Obsidian Sanctuary requires completing a new multi-phase quest through Carlos, a brand-new character introduced in this update. Carlos not only grants access to this biome but also reveals the backstory of The Ark and its inhabitants, thus expanding the lore of the Windblown world. This is the first in a series of quests that will further deepen the game’s narrative.

The update also brings four new weapons: the Fishing Rod, Sharp Sisters, Sentinel Wings, and Elder Sword, each with its own unique attacks and techniques to master. Additionally, a new Trinket, “Chronos Catch,” slows down enemies and projectiles, encouraging experimentation with various builds. Personalization enthusiasts will also get a new Obsidian skin for the Leapers, available in solo or online co-op mode.

A new Remains system has been introduced, allowing you to recover lost resources like Coggs, Memonites, and Encrypted Memories from previous attempts. These resources can be used for permanent upgrades in future expeditions into the Vortex. However, if you fail to retrieve them, you lose them forever. The update also includes new permanent upgrades and various Quality of Life improvements, including enhancements for the Revenge mode in online co-op.
