Tokihiro Naito, the creator of Hydlide and current M2 developer, is bringing his unique “puzzle adventure shooter” XeGrader to Steam this year in upgraded edition titled XeGrader Plus. The announcement signals an opportunity for fans of retro-inspired games and action-RPG hybrids to experience a classic title with modern polish. A demo is set to release this June.
Originally developed for the PC-8001mkII and MSX2 in 2024 and 2025, XeGrader has been reimagined for Steam with enhanced graphics and sound. XeGrader Plus updates the visuals with a style described as “evocative of 8-bit and 16-bit eras”. Chiptune tracks composed by Tadahiro Nitta, known for his work on the Xak series, leverage the texture of FM synthesis to add depth and nostalgia to the game’s soundtrack.
Set in a high-fantasy world suddenly overrun by monsters, XeGrader Plus allows players to choose between a male or female warrior and navigate through dangerous landscapes. Movement is free in eight directions, while combat requires both reflexes and problem-solving: defeating enemies such as slimes and kobolds often involves puzzle-solving to unlock upgrades or overcome obstacles.
Full controller support is available, and the game is compatible with Steam Deck, including a touchscreen option for entering character names. These modern features make it easier than ever to experience a retro-inspired adventure on contemporary platforms. However, not all updates have been purely traditional. The game’s Steam page discloses that AI has been used in creating achievement artwork and in language translation.
