New rumors suggest that Valve is working on a Steam Console that could compete with gaming giants like PlayStation and Xbox. This information was shared by the well-known insider and content creator eXtas1s in a recent YouTube video. According to his claims, Valve is developing a console that could eventually rival the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
eXtas1s asserts that his source, a YouTuber specializing in handheld gaming PCs, revealed that Valve is heavily involved in driver development for the upcoming AMD 9070 GPU. This graphics card is expected to be the first to feature the new AMD RDNA 4 architecture and support for FSR 4 image reconstruction technology.
According to insider information, Valve’s work on these drivers is a strong indicator that the company is developing a Steam Console powered by SteamOS. It is also speculated that Valve might be supporting other manufacturers who wish to create their own desktop consoles running SteamOS.
This isn’t the first time rumors about a Steam Console have surfaced. Earlier, an observant enthusiast noticed a Valve employee testing HDMI CEC functionality for new hardware, which is often used in living room consoles. Additionally, SteamDB uncovered new Valve branding guidelines, including a “Powered by SteamOS” logo, suggesting that future hardware will run SteamOS directly.
There are also hints of a potential Steam Controller 2, internally codenamed “ibex” within Valve. These clues, combined with the latest rumors, suggest that Valve is planning to expand its ecosystem into the console market. Valve has already achieved significant success in the gaming industry with the Steam Deck, a handheld gaming PC running SteamOS. The logical next step would be the development of a Steam Console, which would allow Valve to compete directly with PlayStation and Xbox in the home console segment.
