Microsoft has denied rumors about the imminent retirement of Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming and head of Xbox. These claims spread across social media in the midst of the latest wave of company layoffs.
Xbox communications lead Kari Perez told The Verge that “Phil is not retiring any time soon.” The rumors apparently originated on X, suggesting that Spencer would leave his position after the launch of the next-generation Xbox console, with current Xbox president Sarah Bond set to replace him. Although Microsoft’s response didn’t entirely clarify the situation, it’s clear that Spencer has no plans to step down soon.
Phil Spencer has led Xbox’s gaming division since 2014. During his tenure, he oversaw major changes: the launch of the Xbox Series X and S consoles, the strong focus on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, and the major acquisitions of Activision Blizzard and ZeniMax Media. Spencer also supported bringing Xbox games to other platforms, including PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, turning Xbox into a multiplatform brand. His leadership also introduced innovations like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere.
The latest wave of Microsoft layoffs affects around 9,000 employees, roughly 4% of the global workforce, and includes significant cuts to the Xbox division. Among those impacted are studios such as Turn 10, developers of Forza Motorsport, and ZeniMax Online Studios, which saw the cancellation of its new MMORPG Blackbird. Additionally, Rare’s Everwild and Perfect Dark have been cancelled, along with the shutdown of The Initiative, the studio working on Perfect Dark with Crystal Dynamics.
