GoldenEye 2D is a fan-made tribute to the classic Nintendo 64 shooter GoldenEye 007, reimagined as if it had launched on the original Game Boy. The game uses a clean monochrome pixel style with a soft green tint, closely matching the look and feel of Nintendo’s handheld from the 1990s. This visual choice alone makes it feel like a lost cartridge from another era.
The project was created by the indie team Perfect Run. Visuals were handled by Thomas McCloskey, the music was composed by Eirik, and the programming was done by Bisse. What began as a freeware experiment around 2007 later received a major update in August 2019, bringing the game to version 1.1 and making it widely available on Itch.io.
The action is presented from a top-down view and focuses on stealth, timing, and sharp reactions. You take control of James Bond as he sneaks into a secret enemy communications base, avoiding guards and clearing threats along the way. The tone stays true to the original game, even poking fun at Bond’s status with lines that challenge you to prove worth as a true 00 agent.
Gameplay mixes shooting with light platforming and places a strong focus on careful movement and positioning. Familiar enemies return with small twists that raise the difficulty. Jaws can take far more damage than before, while Oddjob’s famous hat now moves faster and causes steady damage instead of an instant defeat. These changes make the game tough, but also very rewarding to learn and master.
GoldenEye 2D is available as a free download for PC through Itch.io. The file size is small, runs smoothly on modern systems, and requires no setup beyond extraction.
