Retro game preservation is slowly finding a broader audience on modern platforms. D4 Enterprise, the company known for reviving classic Japanese computer titles through its EGGCONSOLE label, has announced that it will begin publishing select rereleases on Steam. The first title leading this expansion is Hydlide 3: The Space Memories, originally released for Japanese computers in the 1980s.
The Steam version of Hydlide 3: The Space Memories is scheduled to launch on February 25, 2026. The game first appeared on the PC-8801MKIISR and was developed by T&E SOFT. Its arrival on Steam marks a notable shift for D4 Enterprise, which has traditionally distributed its retro catalog through subscription services or console storefronts.
According to the announcement, the Steam release will include the gallery mode and English how-to-play section that were added to the Nintendo Switch rerelease in February 2024. Players will have access to full controller support as well as keyboard controls.
However, the game will not receive a full English localization. While menus and instructional content will offer some guidance, the main in-game text will remain in Japanese. This limitation may narrow its appeal to players unfamiliar with the language, though dedicated retro fans are likely to welcome its availability regardless.
Originally released in 1985, Hydlide 3 was marketed as an “Active RPG,” emphasizing real-time action over turn-based combat. The story follows a protagonist chosen by God for their pure heart, tasked with sealing away an evil consciousness threatening the world.
The game builds on the collision-based combat system introduced in earlier entries in the series. Players switch between attack and defense modes while physically colliding with enemies to deal damage. New magic spells such as FIRE, ICE, WAVE and JUMP expanded combat options, while a new parameter called FORTH, representing conscience, introduced themes of morality into gameplay.
