Indie publisher Fellow Traveller, known for story-focused games like Citizen Sleeper, partnered with Galla Studio to release Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo. In our review, we called this game a “deep work of art with powerful storytelling.” It was created by the brothers Paulo and Pavel Lara, blending Mexican folklore with deep narration, and their collaboration with Fellow Traveller made it possible.

The partnership began after Galla Studio’s first Kickstarter campaign for Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo failed. When funding became difficult, a “scout” from Fellow Traveller recognized the potential in their work and contacted them. Following positive meetings, they struck a deal. For the brothers, Fellow Traveller was a “blessing” and a “turning point” because of their financial and marketing support, which allowed them to focus on realizing their creative ideas.

Reflecting on the indie video game industry, the Lara brothers noted its challenging nature. They highlighted the diversity of the scene, where developers from various backgrounds bring unique ideas. However, they also observed that market saturation makes it difficult for individual studios to gain attention among numerous competitors.

Although tools and platforms have become more accessible over the past two decades, the brothers acknowledged that reaching an audience and achieving financial stability remain significant hurdles. They praised everyone who persistently works on their passion projects in this uncertain environment, emphasizing the endurance needed for success in the industry.

Regarding Xbox Game Pass, Paulo and Pavel view it as a sustainable model, especially for smaller indie studios like theirs. They believe the service provides important visibility because it’s “free” for subscribers, making the game easier to discover on the Xbox platform. For developers with less established profiles, the situation is actually very beneficial, providing a steady income while simultaneously introducing their creations to a wider player base.
