Today, December 8, 2025 marks the 19th anniversary of the Nintendo Wii Europe launch, a console that fundamentally reshaped the video game industry by bringing motion controls and interactive entertainment into millions of previously non-gaming households.
Nintendo’s decision to forego the “graphics arms race” of its rivals (the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) and focus instead on accessibility and innovative input paid off spectacularly. The core of its success was the Wii Remote, which used accelerometers and later MotionPlus gyroscopes to translate physical movement into gameplay.
The Wii achieved Nintendo’s goal of attracting a broader audience, successfully drawing in families, casual players, and older adults who had never before considered a video game console. By 2016, Nintendo had shipped over 101.63 million units worldwide, making it the company’s best-selling home console until it was recently surpassed by the Nintendo Switch.
