The start of 2026 could be a difficult time for PC gamers, as new reports suggest that Nvidia is planning a major cut in GeForce graphics card production. Industry sources, including China-based outlets BoBantang and Benchlife, claim that Nvidia may reduce output of the GeForce RTX 50 series by 30 to 40 percent during the first half of the year. Nvidia has not confirmed this plan, but the reports point to growing problems in the global memory supply chain and a change in how the company uses its key parts.
The main reason behind these possible cuts appears to be a shortage of memory. The move to the new GDDR7 standard is part of the issue, but the problem goes beyond graphics cards. Supplies of DRAM and NAND, which are used across many PC parts, are also under pressure. Without enough GDDR7, Nvidia cannot keep up its current production speed. Some analysts also believe the company is reacting to weaker demand, as higher part costs continue to push PC prices higher for consumers.
From a business point of view, the plan makes sense. If memory is limited, Nvidia is likely to focus on the products that bring in the most profit. This means using available memory for high-end cards like the RTX 5080 or for professional RTX PRO models, rather than for mid-range GeForce cards. When parts are scarce, cheaper models are often the first to see cuts so the company can protect its most valuable products.
Reports suggest that the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB will be hit first. The cut to the 16GB version of the 5060 Ti stands out, since it uses the same amount of memory as the much more expensive RTX 5080. From Nvidia’s view, it is more profitable to use limited GDDR7 memory in a high-end card than in a mid-range one.
This shift could be bad news for gamers since new games are starting to need more video memory, and the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB has been popular because it can handle modern graphics without major limits. If supply drops, buyers may have to settle for cards with less memory or pay much more for a higher-end model.
