Project Tower Was Originally More Ambitious, But Budget Constraints Forced Developers to Cut Content

We recently interviewed the studio Yummy Games about their game Project Tower and they shared more details about this unique shooter that combines bullet hell and puzzle elements with an innovative transformation mechanic. They revealed how much content they had to cut and admitted that the project was originally far more ambitious. However, due to the constraints of being a small indie studio, the game’s scope had to be reduced.

“Yes, we had to cut quite a few features. Some of the biggest cuts included: an open-world level on the 4th floor, which featured a prisoner camp. It simply didn’t fit well with the rest of the game, and perfecting it would have taken too long.”

“We also removed a transformation system that allowed players to store and swap forms, because it over-complicated the level design too much. Another cut was a boss fight where prisoners would assist the player, but we simply didn’t have enough time to execute it properly. It’s always hard to let go of ideas, but we had to stay focused on finishing the game.”

The unique transformation mechanic allows players to morph into scanned creatures or objects. Some transformations are extremely useful in combat, enabling them to deal heavy damage or perform long-distance jumps. The boss fights are also one of the game’s highlights, offering challenging encounters that test player reflexes and precision.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Project Tower was released in early January for PC via Steam and PlayStation 5. You can read the full interview here.
