A group of dedicated fans has announced a new mod that adds Sonic the Hedgehog as a playable character to Super Mario 64 Co-op DX. This version of the game is an online multiplayer upgrade of the Super Mario 64 PC port, and it gives modders the perfect base to create a crossover fans have wanted since the console wars of the 1990s.

A newly released trailer shows how Sonic fits into the Mushroom Kingdom’s 3D worlds. The footage features him racing through familiar areas like Bob-omb Battlefield and sliding down the icy paths of Cool, Cool Mountain. To keep the look of the original game intact, Sonic has been rebuilt with a low-polygon style that matches the Nintendo 64 era.

The mod does more than just replace Mario with Sonic. The team is working to properly bring Sonic’s speed and momentum into Mario’s platforming spaces. Running, jumping, and movement are built to feel fast and smooth while still working within the limits of the original level design. To push the crossover even further, the trailer uses music from Sonic R, adding a strong SEGA flavor to the familiar Mario stages.

While there is no exact release date yet, the mod is planned to launch in early 2026. You can find more information and how to download here.
