What started as a simple caravan concept evolved into Scaravan 66, a high-octane action game inspired by psychobilly culture, which blends fast rhythm, roguelike mechanics, and a richly detailed world. This title is being developed by Lithic Entertainment and is set for release in 2025 on PC via Steam, offering a unique experience that combines horror aesthetics, strategic gameplay, and a post-apocalyptic vibe.
The development of Scaravan 66 began with a humble idea: a low-tech, horse-drawn caravan world. However, developers Andy Wood and Al Bellemare soon realized the concept needed more intensity to match their vision. During a brainstorming session, they came across old game jam notes that inspired a new direction: a psychobilly world filled with hell hounds, savage destruction, and a desperate escape from hell.
This shift from a gentle caravan to a chaotic drive down Route 66 completely changed the game’s mechanics, visual design, and character creation. The punk-rock, post-apocalyptic aesthetic of psychobilly proved to be the perfect setting for a vehicular combat game, which is what truly sets Scaravan 66 apart from classic racing titles.
The game revolves around a series of encounters, each featuring multiple waves of enemies. Players have complete freedom in how they approach battles, able to rely on aggressive tactics, strategic maneuvering, or clever use of the environment. The roguelike elements add tension and replayability, as players must navigate the risks of permadeath while fighting to survive and advance.
