After turbulent development changes, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is finally taking shape under the leadership of The Chinese Room, a studio known for atmospheric titles such as Dear Esther and Still Wakes the Deep. This will be the first time this studio faces the challenge of developing a full-fledged RPG, and all indications suggest that Bloodlines 2 will be different from its 2004 predecessor.

The plot of Bloodlines 2 will take place in Seattle, which was planned since the game’s original version. Set in the world of the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition, the game depicts a world where the Camarilla, the long-standing ruling structure of vampires, is at one of its weakest points in history due to the disappearance of key Elders. Other sects, such as the libertarian Anarchs, have gained influence in the Camarilla’s absence.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 Will Offer a Wide Range of Character Customization Options

We will play as Phyre, a 400-year-old Elder who has recently awakened from torpor, a deep, coma-like sleep that vampires fall into. Phyre awakens in a modern world that is completely alien to her. During character creation, you can choose Phyre’s gender, clan, appearance, and certain details from her past. Additionally, the game offers branching dialogue that allows for different approaches to situations, whether through intimidation or manipulation. Notably, NPCs will remember how they were treated and develop attitudes toward you. Also, the game offers five free districts to explore, making Bloodlines 2 The Chinese Room’s most ambitious project to date.

When it launches, Bloodlines 2 will feature four Clans of the vampire bloodline that determine the types of powers available to players. The Tremere are masters of blood magic, ideal for those who prefer a magical approach. The Brujah are rebels specializing in direct combat, while the Banu Haqim are quiet and mysterious, perfect for a stealth approach. On the other hand, the Ventrue, the opulent lords of the night, are focused on control and social interactions.

Gameplay Promises to Be Fun and Action-Focused

The gameplay of Bloodlines 2 is reminiscent of titles like Dishonored. The game is played in first-person, with an emphasis on action and movement, including climbing, mid-air dashes, and other superhuman acrobatics. Combat is more intense than in the first installment, with the ability to perform brutal attacks to replenish blood reserves. Each clan has access to basic melee attacks, a dash, an enemy-repelling knockback, and a telekinetic ability for manipulating objects.

One of the key elements of the game is adhering to the Masquerade, the rule that forbids vampires from revealing their true nature to ordinary humans. Breaking these rules can cause panic, and in extreme cases, even provoke a reaction from the Inquisition. If you are caught in prohibited activities, such as unnatural jumps or feeding in front of witnesses, you will face various phases of caution, from warnings to a chase by the vampire authorities.

Feeding on blood is crucial for a vampire’s survival, both for healing and for using powers. You can feed during combat or outside of it, but it requires a certain amount of caution so as not to break the Masquerade. Bloodlines 2 introduces the Blood Resonance mechanic from the 5th Edition tabletop game, where the blood of victims under certain emotional states (fear, excitement, rage) becomes “resonant.” Feeding on resonant blood is key to unlocking Phyre’s latent vampiric powers.
