The Last Caretaker continues to evolve in a meaningful way with the release of its latest major roadmap update “Curiosity Wakes”, now available for players in Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Developed by Channel37, the update introduces a wide range of new systems, threats, and narrative elements, while the game itself is currently available at a 20% discount.
For the first time, players can establish contact with humanity’s orbital presence, introducing the Council of Humanity system. This allows you to build committees populated by the very humans you’ve been launching into space, effectively tying your actions on the ground to something more tangible. It gives context to what you’ve been doing all along, turning what once felt distant and abstract into something structured and connected.
Of course, the update also expands the gameplay in more immediate ways. The world itself becomes more dangerous, with new threats like Ram Sharks, Laser Sharks, and the awakening ArchAngels adding unpredictability to exploration and combat. Enemies overall have been adjusted to behave more deliberately.
At the same time, you’re given more tools to deal with those challenges. The introduction of allied support units, ranging from escort systems to companion-like “Sweethearts”, means you’re no longer entirely alone in the world. It’s a subtle but important change, especially in a game that has leaned heavily on solitude as part of its identity.
Beyond that, “Curiosity Wakes” adds new locations, quests, and progression paths. Areas like the Shark Research Facility and the Rollerboi Factory open up more of the world, while new resources, modules, and upgrades deepen the crafting and survival systems.
