The indie simulation title Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator is quickly emerging as one of the standout breakout hits on Steam in early 2026, with sales rapidly approaching 200,000 copies just weeks after its March 17 release, as reported by GameDiscoverCo.
Developed by the two-person team at Blood Pact Studios, the game reportedly sold 100,000 copies within its first four days. Priced between 16 and 20 euros, the retro-themed management simulator has also climbed close to the platform’s top 10 new sellers for March, reflecting growing demand for niche, nostalgia-driven experiences.
Retro Rewind builds on the proven “manage and expand a store” gameplay loop popularized by titles like Supermarket Simulator, but distinguishes itself through a strong commitment to 1990s authenticity. Players run a video rental shop in an era before digital payments, with details such as cash-only transactions and carefully crafted in-game aesthetics reinforcing the period setting.
Part of the game’s success can be attributed to its distinct personality and attention to detail, particularly its hand-drawn parody VHS covers that have drawn praise from players. At the same time, the developers leveraged a strong demo strategy ahead of launch, using it to refine gameplay systems and significantly boost visibility.
According to earlier developer insights, the demo not only helped shape the final product but also dramatically increased wishlist activity and community engagement, aided by outreach to content creators and streamers.
Despite its strong start, Retro Rewind faces a familiar challenge for early indie hits: a shortage of endgame content. Player data suggests relatively short play sessions, prompting the developers to expand their roadmap with additional features such as increased storage and the ability to stock video games. Nevertheless, the title underscores a broader industry trend, where small teams equipped with modern tools like Unreal Engine can deliver polished, commercially successful experiences.
