Halfmoon Looks Like One of the Most Interesting Short Indie Games of the Year

Not every game needs to be a massive 100-hour open-world adventure. Sometimes all you really want is a smaller experience with a strong atmosphere, memorable characters, and an idea that sticks with you after the credits roll. That’s exactly the kind of space Halfmoon seems to be aiming for.

Created by independent developer lvl374, Halfmoon is scheduled to launch on Steam on May 22, 2026, although some regions may see it unlock on May 21 due to time zone differences. And while it’s intentionally designed as a short experience, it already has a lot of people curious thanks to its unusual setting and striking visual style.

The game follows Mio, a young woman who has recently died and suddenly finds herself working at a strange bureau that exists somewhere between life and the true afterlife. Instead of moving on peacefully, she ends up handling paperwork and guiding lost souls alongside her senior coworkers, Nami and Rei.

Halfmoon mixes supernatural themes with mundane office life, creating this weirdly cozy atmosphere where conversations about death sit right next to awkward workplace banter and surreal humor. Gameplay blends visual novel storytelling with point-and-click adventure mechanics, focusing heavily on dialogue, exploration, and character interactions rather than action or difficult puzzles.

Visually, the game immediately stands out because of its 1-bit pixel art presentation. Everything is displayed in a high-contrast monochrome style that feels both retro and surprisingly atmospheric. The minimalist visuals actually add a lot to the game’s dreamlike tone, making the afterlife bureau feel strangely isolated and timeless.
