Indie publisher Mega Cat Studios is leaning fully into its retro roots this month, announcing the release of three brand-new games for original NES and Super Nintendo hardware. It’s aimed squarely at players who still love dusting off their cartridges and CRTs.
All three titles will launch exclusively via the Mega Cat Studios online store on January 29. Leading the lineup is Super Fanger, a maze-chasing game for the SNES, joined by two NES releases: the action-puzzler Old Towers and the puzzle-platformer Plyuk. Despite targeting decades-old consoles, each game is designed with modern sensibilities in mind, offering unique mechanics and smart twists on classic ideas.
Super Fanger channels the energy of classic arcade-style chase games, turning every match into a high-speed game of tag. Players move through dynamic mazes, using special abilities and character-specific traits to either hunt down opponents or stay one step ahead. With multiple maps and support for one or two players, it’s clearly built for quick, competitive sessions.
On the NES side, Plyuk takes a more calming approach. After falling into a mysterious underground laboratory filled with failed experiments, Plyuk’s only way out is to clone himself. That cloning mechanic becomes the core of the experience, encouraging clever teamwork-based puzzle solving in a moody, atmospheric 8-bit world.
Rounding out the trio is Old Towers, an action puzzle game focused on movement and precision. Players dash across walls, ceilings, and platforms while collecting coins and avoiding deadly traps. With dozens of levels and multiple characters to swap between, it’s a game that rewards experimentation and quick thinking.
