Ritter & Rotwein Turns Medieval Adventure Into Chaotic Physics Comedy

Medieval games often focus on heroic knights, epic battles, and tales of honor. Ritter & Rotwein takes that familiar fantasy and flips it on its head, turning noble warriors into clumsy, wine-loving ragdolls struggling to survive a world full of traps and chaos. Developed and published by Hurdy-Gurdy Games, this indie title blends difficult platforming with unpredictable physics to create a medieval adventure that’s as hilarious as it is challenging.

Set in a world inspired by 15th-century knightly legends, the game loosely translates its German title as “Knight & Red Wine,” which perfectly captures its tone. Players control wobbling ragdoll knights who must navigate dangerous 2D levels filled with obstacles, enemies, and environmental traps. Movement is intentionally awkward due to the physics-based mechanics, meaning every jump, swing of a sword, or attempt to dodge a trap can quickly spiral into comedic disaster.

One of the game’s most unusual mechanics revolves around wine itself. Drinking red wine acts as a healing tool for the knight, helping you recover during difficult sections. However, it comes with an important drawback: the more wine consumed, the less stable the character becomes. This creates a risk-reward dynamic where healing may help survival but also makes the knight even more difficult to control.

A playable demo is already available on Steam.
