More than two decades after its release, the original Super Smash Bros. continues to evolve thanks to one of the most ambitious fan projects ever created for the Nintendo 64. The team behind Smash Remix has just released version 2.0.1, surprising the community with a major update packed with new features, gameplay improvements, and technical upgrades.

The patch arrives months after the massive 2.0.0 overhaul released in mid-2025 and was revealed with a new trailer. The video showcases several improved stages and highlights the mod’s newest addition: Tug of War, a chaotic multiplayer mode where knocking out opponents transfers their remaining stocks to the opposing team. Instead of simply eliminating enemies, teams battle to shift lives back and forth until one side claims total victory.

Smash Remix has grown enormously since its first public version in 2019. What began as a modest modification adding characters like Ganondorf has evolved into a full expansion of the original game. The mod now includes the entire classic roster alongside dozens of additional fighters drawn from across the series and beyond, including characters such as Falco Lombardi, Mewtwo, Sonic the Hedgehog, and King Dedede.

Content has expanded far beyond the roster. The mod now features more than 140 stages, mixing classic arenas with new locations inspired by Nintendo franchises and other retro titles. Version 2.0.1 refreshes several of these stages with visual improvements, optimized models, and fixes designed to keep them running smoothly even on original Nintendo 64 hardware.

The update also introduces numerous gameplay improvements and quality-of-life features. Players can customize mechanics through Remix Settings, experiment with over 300 music tracks, and test their skills against an upgraded Level 10 CPU designed to behave more like a competitive opponent. Additional options include new items, expanded training tools, and gameplay toggles that adjust mechanics such as stuns or Z-cancel penalties.
