Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Tag Force 3 Marks Its 17th Anniversary in Europe

Seventeen years ago today, in 2008, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Tag Force 3 arrived on the PlayStation Portable in Europe. Though it was released late into the PSP’s life, it quickly became one of the most appreciated handheld entries in the long-running series. The game served as both a farewell to the GX era and a welcome showcase of how well the card-dueling format worked on a portable system.

Developed by Konami, Tag Force 3 continued the formula that made the earlier titles popular: deep card mechanics, large character interaction, and an impressive amount of content. Set during the final season of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, the game allowed players to partner with a wide cast of duelists, including Jaden, Jesse, Aster, Zane, and many others. Relationships played an important role, as spending time with partners unlocked new events, stronger decks, and unique team strategies.

One of the game’s greatest strengths was its huge card pool. Featuring more than 3,500 cards at the time, it offered remarkable freedom in deck building and encouraged experimentation. Players could recreate famous anime strategies or push into completely new styles thanks to the variety of archetypes included. For handheld fans, it provided a level of depth rarely seen on the PSP outside of RPGs.

Visually, the game leaned on the charm of the GX anime with bright character art and smooth duel animations that ran well on the system. Combined with its long campaign, side events, and the ability to duel anywhere, Tag Force 3 became a favorite for players who wanted a portable dueling experience that did not cut corners.

Although the Tag Force series continued for a few more entries, this release is often remembered as one of its strongest moments. It arrived at a time when the GX story was coming to an end, giving fans a final chance to spend time with the cast while enjoying one of the most complete digital card collections available on handheld devices.
