Donkey Kong 64 Native PC Port Launches With Widescreen and High Frame Rates

Donkey Kong 64 can now run natively on Windows, Linux and macOS through DK64Rekongpiled, an unofficial recompilation project that has reached its public 1.0 release.

Rather than imitating Nintendo 64 hardware through a conventional emulator, the project translates the original game’s code into a native application. Players must supply their own legally obtained ROM because the download contains none of Nintendo’s copyrighted game data.

The DK64Rekongpiled project page provides downloads and setup instructions for each supported operating system. Its technical upgrades include widescreen and ultrawide displays, higher resolutions, uncapped frame rates, shorter loading times and keyboard-and-mouse controls.

Several optional changes address long-standing complaints about Rare’s collectathon. Players can enable Tag Anywhere, begin with every Kong unlocked and apply an improvement to the frequently criticised Beaver Bother minigame.

Cutscene skipping, camera improvements, multiplayer and mod support are also included, while the original artwork and audio remain intact. The team says no generative AI was used during development. We previously covered the project when the Donkey Kong 64 PC port was announced in June.
