The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles is a 2D roguelite dungeon-crawling RPG featuring pixel art and a unique combat system that blends turn-based strategy with real-time, arcade-inspired elements. You explore an ever-shifting dungeon with procedurally generated levels, meaning each run will come with new rooms, traps, enemies, and treasures. The game offers a total of 50 carefully designed levels filled with puzzles, riddles, and tactical combat scenarios that require quick reflexes, strategy, and sharp observation.

Three Paths to Victory

There is something special about this game that really pulls you in. Maybe it’s the funny, comedic take on the hero story (you can play as a male or female, which gives you a good reason to play twice), or maybe it’s the unique combat where you must time your attacks perfectly. Hitting the attack gauge at the right moment changes your damage and the result of the fight, and you have to manually click each enemy’s position to either block or attack them.

The game even makes you feel like you’ve missed something important when you leave a level, which encourages you to explore more.

The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles is easy to pick up and play. The puzzles aren’t very hard; in most cases, you can find the clue right where you ar, for example, think through where to push boulders onto plates. Also, the traps are easy to avoid if you just pay attention. A fun extra is the secret rooms. The game even makes you feel like you’ve missed something important when you leave a level, which encourages you to explore more.

There are three distinct playstyles or character profiles. The first is the Destroyer, who focuses on direct combat and brute force. Next is the Explorer (the one I played), which gives you more experience and makes you face more puzzles. Finally, there’s the Resolver, who tries to avoid fighting, deciphers lore, and talks through problems. Each of these playstyles will lead to different outcomes and ways of playing the game.

Beyond the Battle

There’s more to the game than just the playstyles, as you can also choose between three different weapon styles. Each weapon has unique features that change how you fight. For example, a spear lets you move faster, while a mace deals more damage. The level system is also interesting, although it can get a bit repetitive over time. After you level up, you get to choose which abilities to improve. These options include: mastering your chosen weapon for better performance, getting more inventory slots and being able to carry more weight, having more health, or gaining more rage points.

Rage points on the other hand are special, they let you use skills in combat and dodge traps while exploring. Beyond combat being all about timing and reflexes, you also have to manage your character’s needs. You’ll need to eat food and drink and carry potions with you. The game also features a crafting system that lets you create new equipment and improve what you already have. This includes blacksmithing, cooking, and making potions, among other things.

Hitting the attack gauge at the right moment changes your damage and the result of the fight, and you have to manually click each enemy’s position to either block or attack them.

To do any of this, you must gather resources. You can get resources by killing monsters or by foraging them yourself. You’ll need a pickaxe and an axe to gather materials scattered across the levels. Plus, a great thing is the resting area where you’re able to put the resources you don’t need in a ches. The game does provide tutorials from time to time to explain how things work, and they are not annoying or overly intrusive.

Modern Retro Crawler

The story itself is a mix of in-game lore and pop culture references. As you play, you’ll encounter a vast cast of dungeon characters and explore many mysterious plot elements. The narrative also includes messages and journal scraps for you to uncover as you progress, but it’s never overwhelming or too much. In fact, I can see myself returning to this game whenever I have free time, mainly because you’re not forced to finish the entire game in one sitting.

I have to admit, I really liked the game’s graphics. They are easy on the eyes, and they use a pixelated style without being overly done. You can even change the font of the text. The characters are also well-done; their changing facial expressions bring emotion to the game. Plus, there’s a good underlying tension between the hero and his cousin, and vice versa. Overall, everything about the game is quite enjoyable.

If you’re craving a modern take on classic dungeon crawlers, complete with roguelite elements and turn-based combat reminiscent of titles like Clair Obscur or Super Mario RPG, then The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles is a great choice.
